Job Summary:
The College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSTEM ) at Eastern Washington University is currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for an Instructional Classroom Support Technician 4 to support the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Physics.
The ICST 4 position typically supervise staff and/or have significant responsibility in planning, developing, implementing, and reviewing scientific instructional support programs requiring knowledge of a scientific discipline for an entire department; or provide technical and scientific expertise in the coordination of projects and programs related to the development of instructional materials for science faculty.
The Instructional Classroom Support Technician 4 will:
- Recruit, hire, train schedule, supervise student workers that are lab TAs for the department.
- Prepare technologically proficient students to attain meaningful careers.
- Control and track proxy card access to building and labs.
- Maintain the Chemistry Department NMR with respect to cryogens.
- Purchase chemicals, equipment and consumables for the teaching labs and research labs in Chemistry and Physics.
- Work with the LabCup chemical inventory system.
- Department liaison with EWU Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety.
- Liaison with other science departments in the college.
- Proctor exams for instructors as requested.
- May teach laboratory portion of selected courses.

The salary for this position is $56,928 (minimum) up to $66,096. Where the candidate will begin within the range is dependent on education, experience, and skills. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field
- 3 years of experience as a scientific instructional technician or equivalent
- Sufficient knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry to evaluate, modify, and improve lab exercises and manuals
- Budgetary skills
- Ability to supervise undergraduate students
- Ability to advise faculty members regarding instructional labs
- Flexibility in meeting student and faculty needs
- Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that is supportive of the needs including universal access of our students, faculty, staff and the public.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field
- Experience supervising laboratory operations and safety
- Experience supervising laboratory staff
- Experience using LabCup chemical inventory system
- Experience in higher education

Job Duties:
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise students to work as lab TAs. Approximately 20 students employed as TAs on an ongoing basis. Students work as TAs in the teaching labs and grade lab reports.
- Follow student hiring process.
- Determine student minimum requirements for employment.
- Training required to comply with Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act.
- Develop student TA schedules.
- Cover TA lab absences when necessary.
- Determine, control, and track TA proxy access to labs.

Purchasing of chemicals, equipment and consumables for teaching and research labs in the department.
- Track and purchase chemicals. Chemicals are purchase through various venders.
- Setting up of on-line accounts for purchasing with various vendors.
- Tracking of Purchase Orders.
- Tracking of individual accounts for purchases.
- Determine size, purity and cost.
- Tracking received chemicals and supplies.
- Purchase and replace as necessary high pressure gas cylinders on various pieces of equipment.
Percent of Time: 20
Maintain Chemistry department NMR with respect to cryogens
- Liquid nitrogen
- Weekly basis (less than a 10-day interval) NMR must be filled with liquid nitrogen.
- Liquid nitrogen is sources from large dewars weighing approximately 500lbs. each. Each dewar will last approximately three weeks.
- Order dewars approximately every three weeks.
- Move dewars from loading dock to NMR room.
- Coordination of availability of liquid nitrogen for additional activities.
- Liquid helium
- Refill NMR with liquid helium approximately every 5 months.
- Ordering of liquid helium
- Obtain price quotes for liquid helium order.

LabCup EWU Chemical Inventory System
- Enter chemicals into inventory system.
- Track chemicals in inventory system.
- Train TAs in LabCup chemical inventory system.
Percent of Time: 10
Liaison
- EWU Facilities - interaction when issues arise with plumbing, drains, electrical, HVAC, door access, gas, vacuum, compressed air, fume hoods, leaks, IT and other facilities as appropriate.
- Faculty with other departments and public - Chemical advice
- Environmental Health and Safety - ensure all hazardous waste is stored and labelled, weekly check of hazardous waste storage locations in the department, obtain annual respirator certification for hazardous vapors, prepare semi-annual HAPs and VOCs report for the department, department safety committee member.

Chemistry Labs
- Knowledge of all chemistry labs to include reagents required, practical aspects of completing the labs and report requirements.
- Ability to prepare reagents for labs.
- Provide insight into modification of labs to improve lab experience for students.
- Ability to cover all labs in instructors' absence.

Work in various teams associated with current and new projects at EWU pertaining to sciences. Percent of Time: 5
